Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the service has removed violative material and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.

After moments of joining one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most purchases take place. The seller provided an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, posts show dark colored parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively moderated harmful material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially serious health risks”.
