Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
